Letters From the Thoth Tarot
Death This is no grim specter cutting people down in his path. This is a happier Death, dancing around on the bottom of the ocean using his scythe to rake bubbles from the ocean floor - new life out of the deadish sediment. He wears Osiris's crown as well -life after death. This card has a lot of alchemical symbolism in it - the 3 main bits are the Scorpion, Serpent and Eagle and in alchemy these things represent the threefold process of putrefaction. Which sounds disgusting but in fact is necessary to generate enough of the warming heat to incubate the Orphic Egg in its last stage of development. As Crowley says, "The formula of continued life is death, or putrefaction." From The Book of Thoth: The Universe is Change; every Change is the effect of an Act of Love; all Acts of Love contain Pure Joy. Die Daily! Death is the apex of one curve of the snake Life: behold all opposites as necessary complements, and rejoice. Without transformation and change we can't grow - we stagnate and sink to get stuck in the sediments. Let the things that no longer serve us go - in the space they leave, new life can grow.
