This is a vital card in the Great Work we undertake. The Hermit is the Earth -which is connected to Spirit - and along with Mercury and the Sun, they all meet in the Hermit, who carries the lamp of the Sun, that gives light to the world.  Illumination from within.  Crowley says, "in this Trump is shewn the entire mystery of Life in its most secret workings."

a time for us to withdraw from the outer world and look within us. we need to let go of any preconceived notions and opinions of others, and find our own truth. this solitude is necessary because it gives us the perspective and confidence we need to find our own way on our own path. the companion card to the hermit is the moon and that is a hint - we need to use our intuition as well as to see within our own shadows, to find who we truly are.
