A Walk Through the Thoth Tarot
The aces represent the roots of the four elements. They are distinct from the other small cards and there is no real manifestation of the element in its material form. They form a link between the small cards and the Princess. The Aces are not the elements themselves but the seeds of those elements. Ace of Disks This ace symbolizes the root of the Earth element and Assiah, the material world. Looks very earthy and coin-like too! It represents materiality in all senses, good and evil; and is, in a sense, illusionary; it shows material gain, labour, power and wealth, etc. This is our seed - which will grow into many projects. The beginning of our creations.

A Walk Through the Thoth Tarot
Princess of Disks Earth of Earth - "she is strong and beautiful, with an expression of intense brooding, as if about to become aware of a secret wonder." Earth of Earth makes her the lowest court card of the lowest suit. She is the Malkuth of Malkuths, pregnant with all possible potentials. The key to perpetuating life in the universe. Creation, growth, generous, kind and courageous. This card brings new growth, new starts and keeps us grounded in the earth. Be excited! We create our universe! A Walk Through the Thoth Tarot
Prince of Disks Air of Earth, this Prince will blast through any room with, "their great energy brought to bear upon the most solid of practical matters." And his card is full to bursting with all his goods. As Lady Harris said when she painted this one, "he swells and swells and I can't get him in the picture with all the farm produce and bulls you suggest." This is someone who is in control of their material issues. He is incredibly practical - a handyman or woman, who knows how to get things done in the most practical way. Crowley tells us this prince is," competent, ingenious, thoughtful, cautious, trustworthy, imperturbable; he constantly seeks new uses for common things." A Walk Through the Thoth Tarot
Queen of Disks Water of Earth - lifegiving water for a dry Earth! In the Book of Thoth, Crowley says she is quietly passive but in its highest aspect. He also says, " She thus represents the ambition of matter to take part in the Great Work of Creation." She is the Mother of this Element - stable emotionally and well grounded (water of earth) This is a strong and protective element as well as powerfully creative. She will create a loving and safe environment for when you need shelter from any storm. A Walk Through the Thoth Tarot
Knight of Disks Fire of Earth, this Knight is solid and hardworking. I also love his horse, who seems to be more interested in eating than anything else. But, that is actually a perfect symbol for this card, as the Knight's function is, "entirely confined to the production of food." (BOT) The Earth in this card suppresses the Knights natural fire -keeping him well grounded in the material world. This is the hardworking, nose to the grindstone Knight and he isn't much concerned with matters intellectual. He is practical and reliable and knows that the effort you put in to something comes with a great reward. A Walk Through the Thoth Tarot
Ten of Swords The stabbiest of the stabby cards. I also love what Lady Harris wrote to Crowley about this one, "I have done the 10 of swords and promptly Russia takes up arms." This card is the complete identification with the mind/intellect, and in this ten, is in the process of being destroyed. As Crowley says, "It is the ruin of the Intellect, and even of all mental and moral qualities." The issues we started dealing with in the 9 are now coming to their conclusions. The tens of the suits are the ends of whatever processes we are working with and also for a restart, to return to its origin in the ace to begin again. But this time we have more information, we have learned more about ourselves and what we can do and we need to carry this forward with us as we start again. Rebirth, loss, pain, end of a cycle - these are all powerful and transformative events - they just seem a lot worse in the swords suits because of their airy, cold intellectual nature. A Walk Through the Thoth Tarot
Nine of Wands Urk. This is just... unpleasant. Crowley says this is "agony of the mind." As balanced as Yesod gives on the middle column of the Tree of Life, Mars just takes over and we are left with this mess. Our minds are just filled with the mean reds here and Crowley says, "Consciousness has fallen into a realm unenlightened by reason. This is the world of the unconscious primitive instincts, of the psychopath, the fanatic." Despair, cruelty, malice, loss and misery. While these all sound horrible, we need to realize we are in the realm of the mind and it likes analytic thinking. Often to the point of over-analysing everything. And when we do this, we often see truths we would rather ignore or hope will go away. The mind won't sugar coat this and when it happens we either stick our heads in the sand or we face the truth, as uncomfortable as that may be. A Walk Through the Thoth Tarot
Eight of Swords Crowley says, "the Will is constantly thwarted by accidental interference." This card enters Hod, the sphere of Mercury, and Hod being low and out of balance on the Tree of Life leaves this card out of skew. The Swords are about airy freedom of the mind, but Hod is more about structure, so we get blocked there too. Too much force applied to small things; too much attention to detail at the expense of the principal and more important points. We are nitpicking and over analysing everything here, looking for reasons to be contrary. Overall, our minds are restless. When this happens we just need to stop and take a look at what is happening, instead of rushing about with no direction. Banging your head on the wall isn't going to help here. This is temporary and we just need to let this go and focus our energies on the things we can deal with right now. |
