Letters From the Thoth Tarot
Five of Cups
This card shows us where the earlier small cards in this suit were heading: Love leads to Abundance which left uncontrolled leads to Luxury, which left uncontrolled leads to decadence, frustration and disappointment. The Cups up to now where light and clear looking, but here water no longer pours into the empty cups, the lotus flowers are blown away, the sky is a funky red color and the sea is just a stagnant pool.
Sorrow/loss disappointment in those things from which pleasure is expected. Expectation being the key word here. When we expect things to be a certain way and they end up going pear shaped, we get frustrated or angry, let down. But the challenge here is we expect something and then get disappointed when that something doesn't turn out the way we want it to. Then we fear trying it again for more disappointments.
Best to keep any expectations to the realistic or even better, try not to have any. Instead, keep an open eye and mind to what happens each day and let yourself be surprised by whatever happens. There is joy in the unknown as well as fear - so try to stay on the positive side and let the negatives flow away.
