A Walk Through the Thoth Tarot
Knight of Swords Fire of Air - This Knight flies on his horse with propellers on his back! Fiery air sounds like it could be a destructive wind but also a swift and precise energy that can cut through any trouble we find ourselves in. Active, clever, subtle fierce, courageous - inclined to domineer. Crowley says, "the moral qualities of person thus indicated are activity and skill, subtlety and cleverness. He is fierce, delicate and courageous, but altogether the prey of his idea, which comes to him as an inspiration without reflection." This is a time to use our intellect and keep the mind sharp. But also be aware that if we don't balance the analytic mind with our basic humanness, we can become cruel and lose our warmth.

A Walk Through the Thoth Tarot
I did the Cups out of order by accident. The Courts should have come before the rest of the small cards. Princess of Cups Earth of Water The Character of the Princess is infinitely gracious. All sweetness, all voluptuousness, gentleness, kindness and tenderness are in her character. She lives in the world of Romance, in the perpetual dream of rapture. (BOT) The Princess and the Ace have a special relationship. The Ace is the root - the Princess is the end result, the materialization of what was potential in that Ace. She is not all dreams either, even though Crowley sure makes her seem that way - she is Earth of Water, so she stays grounded. Dreams and romantic ideas from her are made manifest - she is the perfect fertile ground for making dreams a reality. Stay grounded in reality and focus your intentions. This Princess makes your ideas into something you can make real. A Walk Through the Thoth Tarot
I did the Cups out of order by accident. The Courts should have come before the rest of the small cards. Prince of Cups Air of Water - "The moral characteristics of the person pictured in this card are subtlety, secret violence, and craft. He is intensely secret, an artist in all his ways... He is in fact perfectly ruthless." (BOT) I am thinking Crowley didn't much like this Prince but he does make a splashy entrance. His eagle chariot blasts off the card in a wave of water and air. The air does make the water unstable - bubbles exploding out of a bottle - that can cause some explosive issues if not watched for. This is a clever Knight, emotional and artistic. But he can be reckless and stormy if not balanced. Think of the art on the card - you want to keep your waves and your clouds in balance so you don't tip your eagle over ;) Walk Through the Thoth Tarot I did the Cups out of order by accident. The Courts should have come before the rest of them. Queen of Cups Water of Water "Her image is of extreme purity and beauty, with infinite subtlety; to see the Truth of her is hardly possible, for she reflects the nature of the observer in great perfection." (BOT) This is a reflection of a reflection here - this Queen is a mirror to whoever looks upon her. She is easy going and makes friends easily - because they see in her, themselves. Crowley says, "she is the perfect agent and patient, able to receive and transmit everything without herself being affected thereby." This is a passive energy, very watery with no ground or fire - so be careful not to pick up others energies or influences and take them as your own. A Walk Through the Thoth Tarot
I did the Cups out of order by accident. The Courts should have come before the rest of them. Knight of Cups Swiftness and violence ill suit a character naturally placid; it is rare indeed to meet a person who has succeeded in harmonizing these conflicting elements (BOT) This Knight and his horse jump off the page in the opposite direction of his brother (Knight of Wands) Fire of Water we have a nice cleansing rain or bubbling spring - as well as slow erosion and dissolving. This Knight is a nice guy, likeable but not very deep. The water sort of blankets his fiery energy, so calling him "shallow water." Crowley says his name is Writ in Water. This is a time to balance your opposites - otherwise you can get a tad unstable. A Walk Through the Thoth Tarot
Ten of Cups Crowley, in a letter to Lady Harris says, "the background out to look menacing. There is something sinister about this card - it ought to suggest a morbid hunger which springs from surfeit." In other words - perhaps too much goodness - so much so that the cups can't even hold them and it's just all spilling on the floor. Crowley blames Mars (which is in Pisces for this card) He says, "Mars is the gross, violent and disruptive force which inevitably attacks every supposed perfection." So, the generic meaning is: Mattered settled: complete good fortune. Permanent and lasting success and happiness - because inspired from above. Which is a good thing - this card tells us things are in their proper places and that we are finally in harmony with the Universe. I think Crowley's warning up there tells us not to take this for granted. Also to stay mindful of what is happening in the Now - stay in the moment and don't get ahead of yourself. A Walk Through the Thoth Tarot
Nine of Cups This card is just the perfect balance and return to stability. It sits in Yesod - the Foundation, this is the sephira that stabilizes the entire Tree of Life and gives us a very happy environment for this card. Crowley says, "this card represents Water in its highest material manifestation." Right now we are in a good space - we have learned to stay balanced and open and to use our Will to push through indolence and apathy to stay connected with the Universal Energy that flows around and through us if we let it. "Complete and perfect realization of pleasure and happiness." There is much beauty in the world around us if we only remember to stay open to it! A Walk Through the Thoth Tarot
Eight of Cups Crowley calls this card the very apex of unpleasantness.... "this card represents a party for which all preparations have been made; bt the host has forgotten to invite the guests; or the caterers have not delivered the good cheer. There is this difference, though, that it is in some way or other the host's own fault." This is where we overindulged in the excess of the seven and now we're just stuck in this mire. Now is the time to ramp up the energy and force ourselves out of this numbness. Transform this blocked energy with our Willpower. Negativity and apathy are going to want to keep you stagnating here but gather your power and let the energy of the Universe join you once more. A Walk Through the Thoth Tarot
Seven of Cups Remember the joy and happiness of the six? Yeah, we didn't stay balanced and now... uck. This is just too much here. Crowley says, "This is one of the worst ideas that one can have; its mode is poison, its goal madness. This represents sinking into the mire of false pleasure." Too much of a good thing here. Unbalanced and leaving us sinking in a mire of goop. We might be tempted to enjoy something that may not be good for us and while it will be quite nice at first - it is going to end badly. A Walk Through the Thoth Tarot
Six of Cups This card really does look like Pleasure. We have balance again and this card just looks happy and bouncy doesn't it? This card sits in Tiphareth (sphere of the Sun) and on the Tree of Life this card sits in a direct reflection of the Ace of Cups. The Sun is very happy here - think of a gorgeous summer day when you have nothing to do but have fun. Crowley says, "Pleasure - in the title card- must be understood in its highest sense; it implies well-being, harmony of natural forces without effort or strain, ease, satisfaction." Commencement of steady increase, gain, pleasure. But Commencement Only. As you can see, water is now flowing again from the lotus blossoms but they have only started to fill up! We have gotten through some heavy emotional turmoil and now we are finding our balance again - with an open heart, keeping our expectations based in reality and staying in the moment. There is an endless river of love and energy for us if we open ourselves up to swim in it. |
